“Hard as a rock” is one of the most universally understood phrases – and for a good reason. One of the fastest ways to drill hard rock is the down-the-hole drill, more commonly known as the DTH. It is designed to operate like a miniature jackhammer attached on the end of a drill string, with the percussion mechanism following the bit down into the drilled hole. The fast hammer action breaks solid rock efficiently into small fragments and flakes, which are then blown up by the DTH’s air exhaust.

For horizontal directional drilling contractors, it’s not just the hardness, but rather the varying densities and unpredictable inconsistencies of rock formations that make it so difficult. Geonex-DTH Drill Rig have no penetration problems in any soil classes even in blasted rock filling. Steel casing provides the necessary support in these difficult conditions and the DTH-Hammer and drill bit combination pulls the casing pipe behind them. Auger rods also convey the soil through the casing in to the launch pit, so this method does not displace or expand any soil around the casing pipe. Casing elements are welded together in full material thickness, providing a strong protection for product pipes.
